“Prague police officers collected 85 used syringes and needles and other infectious material left by drug addicts at 470 locations in the metropolis on Monday, similar to last year. Similar city-wide events are held every year, but police officers also collect needles during their regular errands.
According to the spokesperson, about 60 police officers took part in this year’s one-day Jehla event and checked 470 selected places where drug addicts gather. They targeted playgrounds, rest areas and other places that officers know to be problematic.
Guards are equipped with protective equipment such as forceps, tweezers, gloves and collection boxes to collect syringes and needles. The liquidation was subsequently handled by a specialized company, to which the city police hands over this material.
At the same time, the city police reminded that the public should not, even in good faith, start collecting infectious material on their own. “You need to think about your own safety first and foremost, so we recommend that you always contact the emergency line 156 or contact the police officers on the streets in case of a find,” said a spokeswoman for the Prague police Irena Seifertová.
Last year, according to the spokesperson, the city police handed over 7,383 needles and syringes from drug addicts in collection boxes to the company for disposal. Directly at the Jehla event last year, there were 83 pieces of infectious material.
