The case with the Islamic protesters has a surprising outcome. A Muslim woman, who is also a member of the broadcasting board of public broadcasters, commented on the Hamburg demonstration, which demanded a caliphate last Saturday, on Germany’s ARD. At the same time, her positive attitudes towards the caliphate and sharia law irritated not only the public, but also political representatives. According to Bild, this is another shock for the Germans. The dismissal of Khola Maryam Hübschová from the council is not appropriate, however, because of the amendment to the law, representatives of Islam have their place in the broadcasting councils, informs, for example, the newspaper Bild. She is also the daughter of the German writer and left-wing radical Paul-Gerhard Hübsch, who converted to Islam in the 1960s.

The pro-Islamic demonstration that took place last weekend in Hamburg angered not only Germans and German politicians, but also the rest of Europe. Although the demonstration was supposed to draw attention to the alleged problems of reporting on Islam in the German media, it only came to the attention of the wider public after the demonstrators began to demand the establishment of a caliphate, which, according to them, would be the solution. Among other things, the organization Muslim Interaktiv was behind the organization of the demonstration, which, although it has been under long-term surveillance by the German authorities for its activities, its activities are not illegal.

The entire demonstration was condemned by German politicians and the public. However, support for the protesters was later indirectly expressed by a member of the board of public broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk and a representative of the Muslim community in Hesse, Khola Maryam Hübsch, who is the daughter of the German writer Paul-Gerhard Hübsch, who was known for his radical left-wing views in 1968, then converted to Islam, changed his name to Hadayatullah and became Imam.

When asked by the public broadcaster ARD if she did not see the demonstration in Hamburg as a problem, Hübsch said that she did not. Although she did not renounce her direct support of the organizers of the event and did not directly confirm that “the caliphate is the solution”, she tried to defend both the caliphate and Sharia law in front of Mario Vogt, the CDU’s number one candidate in Thuringia, who stated in the discussion program that “Sharia law and the caliphate it does not belong to our country,” Bild daily reported.

“If a Muslim is good to his fellow man, if he is committed to the common good, if he does voluntary work, then he follows Sharia law,” Hübschová, for example, defended her faith. “Muslims must obey the laws of the country in which they live. This is part of Sharia law. The construction put forward by politicians that there is a conflict between Sharia law and the state is a fabrication,” she then added.

After the debate was broadcast, several people approached the broadcasting board of ARD and Hessischer Rundfunk asking why a woman who supports the caliphate and sharia law should have a seat on the board. Hessischer Rundfunk, however, cannot take action even after the controversial statements of its member. “The composition of the Broadcasting Board is determined by law by the Hessian Land Parliament. The appointment and nomination of persons is exclusively a matter for the organizations listed in the HR Act,” HR spokesman Christoph Hammerschmidt told Bild. The Chairman of the Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting, Harald Freiling, made a similar statement to Bild. “The appointment and dismissal of persons is exclusively a matter for the organizations listed in the Human Resources Act. Hessischer Rundfunk and the HR Broadcasting Council have no influence on this,” he said.

The reason why such people can be there is the amendment to the HR Act from 2016, when the Greens wanted to have a representative of Islam in the Broadcasting Council. As a result, the Erdogan-linked Islamic organization DITIB, the Alevi community, and the Ahmadiyya Islamist community, represented by Hübsch, got into the council.

The Ahmadiyya have previously drawn attention to themselves with slogans claiming, among other things, that pork makes people gay, as well as misogynistic pamphlets demanding that “women obey their men” and wear veils, Bild newspaper reported, saying that it is not the first time that Hübschová has attracted the attention of not only the public but also political representatives with her words.
