As part of the festival, you can also see a film adaptation of Karel Čapek’s novel about the invention of an explosive substance that slips out of the discoverer’s hands from 6 p.m. in the hall of the Faculty of Theology. What if your scientific discovery becomes a dangerous tool of war in the hands of powerful authoritarians? While Čapek wrote Croak after the First World War, Otakar Vávra already filmed it after the Second World War and with the knowledge of the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the atomic bomb. The story of the engineer Prokop, whose discovery of an extremely explosive substance gets out of hand and he watches how it becomes a weapon of war threatening to wipe out the entire world, reflects the scientific progress that actually accompanies war conflicts and becomes a weapon. What then is the relation of the inventor to his discovery when it is used as a weapon?
