“Since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, our group has repeatedly organized similar protests to draw attention to the risk of Russian imperialism,” said Petr Lázňovský on behalf of the Kaputin group.

The protest was sparked by a stop on the “Victory Road” organized by the Night Wolves MC Europe group, an offshoot of the Russian motorcycle club Night Wolves, which has ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The motorcyclists started their 10th journey this year in Michalovce, Slovakia, stopping at memorials to those who died from World War II on the way. They are to arrive at Olšany in Prague on Monday.

In addition to Czechs and Slovaks, fans of the Night Wolves also came from Germany, Macedonia or Estonia. The group walked past the protesters and headed to the Red Army’s Honorary Burial Ground. There, the Czech and Slovak national anthems were played, and the participants laid wreaths and flowers at the monument.

There were no major clashes

After that, the bikers and their supporters went back and again passed by the protesters with flags. The bikers did not react to their presence, several protesting people started a discussion with them.

One of the departing Night Wolves supporters tried to put out a cigarette over the Ukrainian flag, and there were no major clashes between the two sides.

Another protest is being prepared by the Kaputin group for Monday, when supporters of the Night Wolves are expected to arrive at the Olšan Cemetery. The Russian members of the group do not take part in the motorcycle ride, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine they are not allowed to travel to the Czech Republic. It is part of the sanctions that the European Union imposed on Russia after it invaded Ukraine.

Every year, the Noční vlci motorcycle club organizes rides through European countries, including the Czech Republic, on the occasion of the anniversary of the end of the Second World War. However, their actions arouse resentment among the authorities, as the association is often described as extremely nationalistic.

In addition, the head of the Night Wolves, Alexander Zaldostanov, is on the sanctions list of the United States of America and the European Union for supporting the Russian annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea.

The Kaputin group has been speaking out against Russian aggression in Ukraine since its beginning. In the past, for example, by hanging a banner on a house in Žižkov, which belongs to the family of a Russian arms manufacturer, she requested the confiscation of the house.

She has also repeatedly displayed in public a statue representing Russian President Vladimir Putin on a golden toilet.
