The Liberec swimming pool has been closed to the public for almost a month. However, it is not yet certain when the reconstruction will begin. There was an objection against the winner of the tender, which needs to be dealt with, it is impossible to say exactly when it will be. The pool is now cleared and the construction company is waiting for it to arrive. So far, at least for the swimming clubs, the twenty-five meter pool is working.
“The tender is ongoing, the winner has been selected, there has been an objection that is being dealt with. It has a legislative process, it will take a few more days, maybe weeks. Anyone can appeal to the ÚOHS. Until a final decision is made, we don’t know when the reconstruction will begin,” says the city councilor Robert Korselt (TOP 09).
However, according to him, the reconstruction can easily start in a few days. “We are able to leave the pool within a week. But it will probably take a few weeks, maybe until the end of June,” he admitted. At the end of April, however, the vast majority of employees also leave, five out of eighty will remain.
Until the end of June, the operation of the twenty-five-meter swimming pool, which is used by swimming clubs, is also planned. “The last weekend of June is the Olympics for children and youth, performance training runs until this date. So far, we have a promise from the city that we will be here by this date. What will happen from September, probably no one knows at the moment,” he said Petr Kořínek from the club Slavia Liberec.
400 children had to stop swimming
Reconstruction means big problems for the club, it had to say goodbye to four hundred out of six hundred wards. He didn’t have the capacity for them. “We have a tip left, which we spread around the surrounding pools. Others have to do another sport for two years,” continues with the fact that children will swim in Stráž pod Ralskem, Rumburk or Varnsdorf during the reconstruction. “Each training session will therefore be extended by two hours,” supplies.
The large swimming pool remains filled for now. “It’s a huge weight, releasing it could cause so-called inhalation of the structure and possible movement, so it remains up to the direction of the construction company, which will release it in a controlled manner and monitor whether there are any changes,” explains city technician Miroslav Janoušek.
According to him, a possible early release could also bring another complication. “If it was drained and left to dry, bacteria would grow and no one would notice it. The water is therefore overchlorinated, unheated and at minimum speed to maintain quality. But for swimming, the water would have to be changed. It’s basically a filler to keep the status as it is.” he added.
It is not clear when the reconstruction will begin. According to the representatives of the city, it is not even possible that the small pool would remain in operation even during the construction. “During the construction of the twenty-five, the surrounding operations were not affected, now a total reconstruction will take place, service operations such as changing rooms, washrooms, but also the entire technology, for example, hot water, will not be in operation,” said Janousek.
“The project is designed so that the construction takes place as quickly and as cheaply as possible and with the least possible complications. Everything is possible, but at this moment there is no other way to do it. The decision was made a long time ago. The whole thing will be available to the construction company, which will carry out the reconstruction as quickly as possible. It was a difficult decision whether to possibly bother with the operation of the twenty-five and thus prolong the construction. That’s when such a decision was made,” Korselt added.
The corruption case and the pool
However, one more fact can affect the possible start of the reconstruction, namely the police investigation. According to Korselt, however, the city is not considering the possible cancellation of the competition. “We are not aware that anything is happening during the preparation. Maybe twenty people commented on the project, the project took a very long time to put together. We don’t feel it’s being manipulated. There were a lot of assessments, documents, budget checks, we had technical inspections,” he says.
The pool was opened in 1984, thirteen years ago the extension of the twenty-five meter pool and the diving tower took place. Last year, 600,000 people visited the pool. According to the plan, it should be closed for two years, but it will depend on when exactly the reconstruction will begin and also on other circumstances, whether, for example, there will be other complications that are not yet known.
