Construction brings critical conditions in traffic almost every day. It is not unusual for convoys of trucks to stand for tens of kilometers on both sides.

The expansion of the D1 highway between kilometers 194 and 196 in Brno to six lanes should be completed two months earlier, i.e. in mid-April next year, Transport Minister Martin Kupka (ODS) told journalists at a night briefing. The state will pay 70 million crowns more for it, the original price exceeded one billion crowns. According to Kupka, it is money well spent considering the problems caused by the building.

Already this year, the Directorate of Roads and Highways (ŘSD) wants to start the reconstruction of the intersection of the D1 and D2 highways at the 196th kilometer, which is the next stage of the expansion of the D1 highway to six lanes between the 182nd and 210th kilometers. With regard to the intensity of traffic and the restrictions that the reconstruction of the intersection will bring, it can be expected that problems when passing through the south of Brno will persist. The general director of ŘSD Radek Mátl said that the road workers will strive for a way of working that should not worsen the already bad situation. For several months, work will be carried out in parallel both on the highway intersection and on the adjacent section towards Prague.

The deadline for selecting the construction company that will rebuild the highway intersection has already been postponed several times due to delays in the tender process. “We assume that we should receive offers in May. Construction at this intersection will significantly affect traffic on the D1 and D2 highways,” said Matl. Estimated costs are 3.8 billion crowns and the duration of construction is four years.

The expansion of the highway began last August, and although traffic is maintained in two lanes in each direction, it brings critical traffic conditions almost every day. It is not unusual for convoys of trucks to stand for tens of kilometers in front of the extended section from both sides, and the road stretches for many hours for drivers.

According to the plans of the ŘSD, the expansion of the highway should end in Brno and its surroundings in 2030.
