Security measures are being strengthened in the Czech Republic, the government decided to do so on the recommendation of experts

The government decided based on the recommendations of the Joint Intelligence Group and increased selected security measures as a precaution. The reason is the current security situation and the planned major sporting and social events that will take place in the coming months – the World Hockey Championship, which will be held in Prague and Ostrava from May 10 to 26, but also the subsequent European Football Championship in Germany and Olympics in Paris.

“Although at the moment there is no information about a direct threat to the Czech Republic, preventive measures must not be underestimated in view of the security situation in the world and the recommendations of experts,” said Minister of the Interior Vít Rakušan (STAN).

“The degree of threat from terrorism is not increasing, only the given measures within the first stage are being adjusted,” said the Austrian. The police should increase their activity at sports and social events, at embassy buildings and selected institutions. An adequate number of patrols with ballistic protection and long weapons were set aside, they could appear at sporting events, at transport hubs or international airports.

According to the Austrian, the supervision of the ban on the entry of trucks into larger cities will also be more intensive. The ministry also said that security forces will pay increased attention to radicalization in the online environment and on social networks. Intensive communication and information sharing will also take place between the security forces and the local government.

The first level of threat from terrorism has been valid in the Czech Republic since March 2016, when it was approved by the cabinet in response to the terrorist attacks in Brussels. The creation of a four-level warning system was approved by the government in January 2016. According to the Austrian, the Ministry of the Interior will assess the existing system of degrees of threat from terrorism. If necessary, he will propose its revision.
