Frank-Walter Steinmeier: A walk in the center of Prague and a meeting with Fiala

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s two-day visit to Prague continued today. After speaking at Prague Castle in the morning at a conference on the Czech Republic’s entry into the European Union, he went for a walk in the center of Prague. He willingly took pictures with passers-by, even though he was surrounded by security guards. Subsequently, he held talks with Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) in Kramář’s villa.

Fiala should speak and Steinmeir according to the government office on defense and energy cooperation and on further assistance to Ukraine, which is facing the third year of Russian military invasion. Steinmeier arrived for a two-day visit on Monday, and was received at the Castle by Czech President Petr Pavel.

Pavel stated after the meeting that The Czech Republic is interested in deepening cooperation with Germany in energy, science, research and development, digitization and cyber security. According to him, Germany is a strategic partner. Steinmeier noted that the strategic interest of both countries and the entire Union is the enlargement of the EU. Germany according to him supports Western Balkan countries, Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia in joining the bloc. The Czech Republic has held the same position for a long time

According to Pavle, the Czech Republic and Germany also share a view of Russia’s war against Ukraine or the security situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip. Steinmeier reminded that Germany is the second largest supporter of Ukraine after the United States. According to him, the aid mainly concerns anti-aircraft defense, where Germany contributed the latest technology to Ukraine being able to defend itself against attacks. He also appreciated the Czech initiative to purchase artillery ammunition, in which Germany is participating.
