These days, the capital is once again commemorating the uprising that freed it from Nazi tyranny. As in previous years, this year it is also possible to remember the events of 79 years ago thanks to the Places of Remembrance application, which displays an interactive map with monuments where you can honor the heroes who fought and died for our freedom, and learn about more information about them.

“The Prague Uprising is a significant event in our history and proof that it is never too late to stand up to evil. Thanks to this application with an interactive map, the possibilities to remember the thousands of heroic victims of resistance against the Nazi occupation will be expanded,” says Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda.

During the Prague Uprising between May 5 and 9, 1945, approximately three thousand Czechoslovaks died who took part in heavy fighting, were killed in bombings, or were executed by the Nazis.

Thanks to the unique interactive map, the people of Prague can find out more about places of worship in the vicinity of their place of residence and the whole of Prague and honor the memory of the fallen and symbolically “light” an online candle at the monument. The map also contains detailed information about individual memorials, their exact address, photo, character or, for example, the number of people mentioned. For each monument, it is also possible to see how many people have already lit a candle online.

City Hall The City of Prague compiled current lists of memorial sites based on data from the Central Register of War Graves of the Ministry of Defense. Following this, the Institute of Planning and Development The city of Prague processed the data into an interactive map. Prague owns all licensing rights to this application, including the consent of the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic to use data from the war graves register. The costs of the project were minimal, as it was handled within the organizations of the Prague municipality.

The Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic is launching the project DěkujemeNezapomínáme on the occasion of the Prague Uprising. As part of this campaign (more HERE) it is possible to take selfies at places of worship or war graves and share them on social networks. You then need to add DěkujemeNezapómínáme to the post and mark the profile “War graves – Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic”. It is also possible to add photos to the comments under the post on the Facebook profile “War graves – Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic” (HERE) or on the Instagram profile “War veterans – Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic” (HERE).

You can find the Places of Worship application HERE.
