The case was brought to the desk of the Liberec branch of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Ústí nad Labem, under which the criminal activity of the guards and employees of the Rýnovice prison falls.
He received 3,800 crowns in cash on at least four occasions
“The indictment was filed at the District Court in Jablonec nad Nisou on March 7, against a group of six people, one of whom was a civilian employee of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic. So far, the case has not been decided by the court nor has the main trial been held,” Martin Tvrdík, the head of the Liberec branch of the representative office, told Práv.
He made seven calls
The reason why the court did not discuss the matter, even though the prosecutors handed over the case to him five months ago, is the fact that, according to Tvrdík, there was apparently a change in the judge who got the case on the table.
The concerned, now former civilian employee, according to the findings of the Rights arising from the indictment, at least from the summer of 2020 to the first quarter of 2021, established contact in the prison with two convicts, from whom he was supposed to obtain connections to people outside the prison and, thanks to them, then covertly give the convicts seven mobile phones. According to the file, he received at least 3,800 crowns in cash for this “service” in at least four cases.

The prison figured it out
The contact for him should have been arranged by the mentioned two convicts who came up with the offer, through their relatives outside the prison. However, in November 2020, members of the prison prevention and complaints department of Rýnovice Prison came to investigate the actions of their worker.
“Given the suspicion that a civilian employee of the Rýnovice Prison is involved in the matter, these findings were subsequently forwarded to the General Inspection of Security Forces (GIBS) for further investigation. The Prison Service and the General Inspectorate worked closely together on the case,” Prison Service spokeswoman Markéta Prunerová told Prav.
The seven phone calls that GIBS investigators were able to document were subsequently illegally used by four convicts in the prison. All of them heard charges for this during the course of last year, three of them for bribery and obstructing the execution of an official decision, and the fourth for only the second of these crimes. Even a civilian outside the prison who brokered the bribe did not escape prosecution. All five face another two years behind bars.

“On March 18, 2021, a criminal prosecution was initiated against an employee of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic for the offenses of accepting a bribe and obstructing the execution of an official decision, and if found guilty, he faces up to four years in prison,” GIBS spokeswoman Ivana Nguyenová confirmed the information to Prava Prava, stating that in January of this year the inspectorate suggested indicting all six people, and the public prosecutor’s office agreed to it in March.
The defendant in question managed to terminate his employment relationship with the prison by agreement just one day before his indictment at his own request, so he avoided direct dismissal.
