It’s Easter Monday. Boys and men go out with a slob and get Easter eggs for beating the girls. The eggs were most often dyed red, thus symbolizing love and the blood of Christ. That is why Easter Monday is also called red. The pomłazka is knitted from fresh willow wicker, and according to tradition, the girls will stay young and healthy.

Customs such as sprinkling and pouring water signify the arrival of spring and are supposed to ensure a harvest. But the ritual must be completed. “The pomlázka is then taken, twisted into a circle, and if there is running water nearby, it is thrown into it, and if not, it is thrown onto the ridge of the roof, where it will remain and gradually disintegrate,” says Martin Šimša, director of the National Institute of Folk Culture.

The boys then receive painted Easter eggs from the girls, which symbolize a new life.

“In our country, one of the oldest finds of Easter eggs is dated to the middle of the eleventh century. These are red eggs with geometric motifs found in a woman’s grave in Velké Hostěrádky,” adds Markéta Slavková from the Institute of Ethnology of the Academy of Sciences.

“Remember that you should always act holy during this period, because it is the period sanctified by the Resurrection. Don’t forget the feasts and the accompaniments, because there are holy days, it went completely wrong,” explains Šimša.

On this day, Christians continue to celebrate the Sunday resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“Of course, since Monday immediately follows Easter Sunday, one maintains a certain solemnity, which is why the service is usually more solemn,” says parish priest Jan Houkal. They rejoice together for eight days, it is the so-called Easter Octave.
