“It was unequivocally proven that only the defendant was in the house at the time of her death, the court rules out that anyone else could be there,” said the president of the senate, Dagmar Bordovská.

She added that the woman burned as a result of the defendant’s active involvement. Only the damage was ignited, and only she, including what was thrown at her, burned. Either before setting it on fire or after, said the judge.

The incident happened late in the evening on November 25 last year. According to the prosecutor, the man set the girlfriend on fire while she was lying in bed. “With the intention of killing her, he covered the woman with textiles, which he doused with flammable liquid and set on fire,” the public prosecutor said earlier.

According to the president of the senate, however, it was not proven that the man covered the woman with some textiles before the act. According to the court, it was possible that the man, after the woman caught fire, evaluated the situation differently and tried to extinguish the fire with textiles. In his closing argument, the prosecutor proposed a sentence of seventeen years in prison.

‘No Evidence’

The defendant previously stated that he did not remember what happened at the time because of the alcohol he had consumed. It is said that he only woke up in the hospital, having suffered burns during a fire in the house.

“I don’t think I’m the one who caused the accident. I think I was trying to put it out, that’s why I got the burns. No evidence that I threw the match was brought against me,” said Nečas earlier. He said he had no reason to hurt the woman and destroy his home.

He also described a complicated coexistence, according to him it was an “Italian marriage”. “We’ve been together since about 2010, she stabbed me in 2013, I took it all on myself. Our relationship was up and down, when she didn’t drink, she was a million dollar woman who would blow me out of the blue,” the man previously said. He added that when she drank, she was unusable for several hours.

Two daughters of the deceased also joined the proceedings with a claim for payment of non-pecuniary damage, each demanding 1.1 million crowns. The regional court awarded them a total of about one million crowns, with the rest of the claim referred to civil law proceedings.
