Girona’s players dominated the 34th round of LaLiga against Barcelona with the same result as in the autumn, 4-2, and crowned Real Madrid as champions at a distance. Although the guests won the first half thanks to Robert Lewandowski’s penalty kick, after the change of sides, the incredible attacking power of the Gironistes was revealed, in whose goal storm the experienced Porto midfielder participated twice. The home team has already dazzled not only the Spanish football public several times and secured a sensational participation in the Champions League in advance.

Lewandowski’s second-half hat-trick against Valencia theoretically kept Barcelona in the title race, but it would be hard to find anyone in Spain who believed in the Catalans’ defence. Real’s win a few hours ago extended the White Ballet’s lead to 14 points with five games remaining for the Blaugranas. The first one, moreover, on the pitch of the competition from Girona, which has lost points only three times on its pitch.

The start of the match confirmed that both teams like to play attacking football. Three minutes after the opening whistle, Lamine Yamal sent a cross to Andreas Christensen. The Danish international did not hesitate and, by processing the ball with his chest and then volleying from the turn, he recalled James Rodríguez’s legendary goal from the World Cup in 2014.

Immediately after the play-off came the answer from the home team. Artőm Dovbyk jumped to the center in the box and beat Marc-André ter Stegen. In the 15th minute, Christensen could have added a second goal. However, his header was eliminated on the goal line by Paulo Gazzaniga. The Argentinian goalkeeper missed Ilkay Gündogan’s finish but was saved by the crossbar. Lewandowski broke the deadlock at the end of the first half with a penalty awarded for a boundary foul on Yamal.

Gironistes did not initially show the desire to level the score after the break and rather let the Blaugranas play. That’s why coach Míchel sent fresh forces into the fight in the 65th minute, among them Porto, who took advantage of the hesitation of the Blaugranas defense and equalized just after a few seconds on the pitch. Girona were stimulated by the goal and took the lead after just two minutes thanks to Miguel Gutíerrez, whose shot Jules Koundé unluckily headed into his own net.

In the 75th minute, Porto completed the destruction of Barcelona when ter Stegen was caught off guard with a brilliant volley from outside the box. In the setup, the players in red and white even tried for a fifth shot, but once Koundé kicked the ball on the goal line, the second time the German goalkeeper intervened.

Girona thus dominated the second match between them of the season and jumped to second place. They will play in the next round on May 10 at Alavés, Barcelona will welcome Real Sociedad three days later.
