“The government I lead has decided unanimously: The inflammatory channel Al Jazeera will be closed in Israel,” Netanyahu wrote on X.
The decision to end the broadcasting of Qatari television in the country takes immediate effect, Israeli Minister of Communications Shlomo Kar’i added on X, who signed the relevant regulations.
Israel Army Radio reported that Kar’i’s order banning the channel from broadcasting was valid for 45 days. To do this, the minister used the law approved in April, which allows the government to close foreign broadcasting stations considered a threat to national security.
A few hours after the cancellation of the television broadcast, a video of the raid in the hotel room used by Al Jazeera as its office was released on the Internet. In it, plainclothes police officers can be seen dismantling camera equipment.
Israel accuses Al Jazeera of supporting the Palestinian Hamas movement with its coverage, with whom the Israelis have been waging war since October 7, 2023, due to its large-scale terrorist attack on Israeli territory.
