Among the four arrested in the southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu were a translator, a person processing visas and air tickets and two main “recruiters”. In addition to the arrested, the investigators are also examining other persons.

Reuters spoke with the families of two Indian men who died fighting for Russia in Ukraine. According to them, the men were expected to work in the army as an “auxiliary force”. India’s foreign ministry said it was discussing the cases with Russia, and Moscow did not respond to repeated requests for comment from reporters.

India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is among the countries that did not condemn Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, and continues to consider Moscow as a strategic partner, but also maintains multi-layered relations with the United States and Britain. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba visited the world’s most populous country at the end of March to gain support for the Ukrainian peace plan. India emphasizes the need for diplomacy and dialogue to end the war and has expressed willingness to participate as a negotiator in eventual peace talks.
