Taxation of still wine in the Chamber of Deputies. The opposition joined the people’s resistance

--

“Making the Czech Republic almost the only wine-growing country in the EU that burdens still wine with excise tax is a downright incompetent proposal. The consumption tax is associated with a large amount of administration and costs, which would make domestic wine production more expensive and ultimately mean the end of many family wineries, less tourism and the gradual transformation of our landscape,” Alena Schillerová, chairwoman of ANO deputies, told Novinkám.

According to her, the production of wine in our country is more expensive than in the southern states, which also support their winemakers very consistently, considering the geographical location.

People are once again torpedoing the excise tax on wine

“As a person who spent most of his professional life in the Financial Administration, I also know that no major budgetary benefit would result from the introduction of this difficult and costly tax to administer. Any isolated solution that will not apply to all EU member states, but will only affect winemakers from the Czech Republic, should be out of serious debate,” Schillerová rejected the intention of the majority of the coalition parties.

The SPD is also against the introduction of consumption tax on wine. “Protection of our winemakers from foreign competition, which in their countries often has higher state support, subsidies and more favorable tax conditions. Czech and Moravian winemaking plays an important role not only in the economy and employment, but also in the field of protecting and enhancing nature and the landscape and contributes to the development of our tourism industry,” summed up the position of the movement’s deputy, Lucie Šafránková.

According to their chairman Michal Šmarda, the Social Democrats, who are now outside the House of Representatives, want the same taxation of wine here as in other EU countries. “We must ensure that Austrian, German or Slovak winemakers are not favored over Czech winemakers,” declared Šmarda.

Excellent: an excise tax would put domestic winemakers at a disadvantage
