The incident happened on Sunday around noon at the Freedom Convoy, the most visited event of Pilsen’s Freedom Celebrations, i.e. the celebration of the liberation of the city by the American army and the end of the Second World War.

“We thoroughly investigated the whole event and informed two persons of the suspicion of committing the offense of founding, supporting and promoting a movement aimed at suppressing human rights and freedoms and the offense of disorderly conduct committed as an accomplice,” said the spokeswoman. According to her, the police informed them of the suspicion in abbreviated preliminary proceedings, which is not an investigation.

“We will now hand over the entire file to the public prosecutor’s office, which continues to act,” she said. This may still order further investigation, or the case will go to court. The man and woman now have the status of suspects, not accused.

Police responded to a video that appeared on https://twitter.com/zeman_vaclav/status/1787074210176680081?s=46. It features a historic US Army truck with someone waving a swastika flag from its cab. On Sunday afternoon, the police established the identity of the man and woman. She confirmed the waving of the Nazi swastika flag.

When examining the video, the police cooperated with the organizers of the convoy and with the municipality. “Such behavior is completely unacceptable and should be strongly condemned. The police are already investigating the case. I believe that the perpetrators will be punished according to the applicable legislation,” Pilsen Mayor Roman Zarzycký (ANO) said on Sunday.

According to his information, they were not members of traditional military clubs, but an individual participant in the convoy.

“They are jeepers, they have nothing to do with us. The police are already looking into it, they know about it, I’ve already talked to them,” said Pavel Rogl, commander of the Military History Club of the 16th Armored Division, one of the main organizers of the convoy, on Sunday. The club had the most members and equipment in the convoy.

The Convoy of Liberty with more than 300 military historical American vehicles passed through Pilsen between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Twenty jeeps carried the descendants of the American and Belgian veterans who liberated the city in May 1945.

Along the nearly five-kilometer route, thousands of people stood on both sides of the roads, in windows and on houses, some with American and Czech flags and lilacs. The convoy drove through the main Klatovská třída and Rooseveltova Street to the vast Republic Square, which was completely full. People could see some of the cars and talk to the relatives of the veterans.
