Relief for Schick et al.? Alonso rejected the giants and will stay at Leverkusen

--

Xabi Alonso is currently a hot commodity in the football market. Not even when his charges are in the fight for a championship treble. In the Bundesliga, Leverkusen’s lead is ten points and, barring some unexpected collapse, Patrik Schick and others will end Bayern’s 12-year streak and lift the championship title over their heads. They are also the current favorite in the German Cup, at the same time they advanced to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

In short, Leverkusen is currently doing well on all fronts. And Alonso has a lot of credit for that.

Which, of course, could not go unnoticed in world football. Clubs in which Alonso previously played as a player, namely Liverpool and Bayern Munich, have reportedly shown interest in the former player’s services. It would certainly be an honor for Alonso to be in charge of the staff of one of the biggest teams in the world. And also the club in which he played.

However, according to foreign media, Xabi Alonso should have rejected both clubs, at least for the time being, and remained in Leverkusen for the upcoming season. According to popular football journalist Fabrizio Romano, the exit clause should also be activated in the summer of 2025. According to the media, this should be in the amount of approximately 15 million euros (approximately 380 million crowns).

The information about the stay was subsequently confirmed by Alonso at the press conference before the match with Hoffenheim. “I had a meeting with the management and I told them that I will stay at the club and continue. I used the national team break to think and make a decision. Leverkusen is now my place,” said Alonso.

It is an inconvenience for Liverpool, as Alonso was supposed to be the primary option to replace Jürgen Klopp, who had previously announced that he would retire after eight years at the club that knocked out Sparta Prague in the round of 16 of the Europa League at the end of the season. The Guardian reports that the first coaching names on the list are currently Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and Sporting Lisbon’s Rúben Amorim.

Germany’s Bayern is dealing with a similar problem. Thomas Tuchel leaves him after the season, so he is also looking for a replacement. Alonso was offered as ideal, but this option apparently fell through in the end. Even Bayern president Uli Hoeness does not believe in the Spaniard’s imminent arrival. “Given Leverkusen’s current success, Alonso is more inclined to stay at the club because he doesn’t want to leave the club,” Hoeness said, according to The Guardian, before a press conference where Alonso confirmed his stay.

Where Alonso will go after his stay in Leverkusen remains in the stars. However, his position was to remain unchanged until the next season.
