WTA CHARLESTON – Caroline Wozniacki returned to the WTA 500 clay tournament in Charleston, USA for the first time since her final defeat in 2019 and ended her equally long wait for a clay victory. The fans remembered the Danish champion from 2011 with a supreme performance, when she outclassed the home substitute McCartney Kessler 6:0, 6:1.

Wozniacka – Kessler 6:0, 6:1

Caroline Wozniacki retired after missing a match point at the previous event in Miami and previously scratched at Indian Wells due to leg problems. Now in Charleston, however, she got her taste and started the tournament with an unequivocal win. She outclassed the unsuccessful qualifier McCartney Kessler 6:0, 6:1 in 61 minutes of play.

The 33-year-old Dane entered the match actively and gave the American substitute from the second world hundred the canary. She didn’t hold serve at the start of the second set, but immediately won six games in a row to record her most decisive win since her comeback last year.

Former world No. 1 Wozniacki, who resumed her career last summer after giving birth to two children and more than three years, played her first match on clay since Roland Garros 2019 and won on it for the first time since April 6, 2019. That was when she advanced to the final in Charleston.

“It’s been some Friday since I last played on clay. But I think I played a good match. I felt good on the court and I’m looking forward to the next round,” said Wozniacki, the Grand Slam champion.

In the second round, the 2011 winner will face the Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinin, against whom she did not convert a match point at the previous tournament in Miami.

The top seeds are home Jessica Pegula and Tunisian defending champion Ons Jabeur. Czech female tennis players will not compete in the main competition this year.
