Cale Makar shows himself again in a very good light in the elimination fights. The defender shows off his offensive tastes to the fullest, his teammates are no longer surprised by such a performance of the young Canadian. They are well aware that they have one of the best defenders in the world right now.

Cale Makar showed a really great show in the fourth game, when he started the offensive action with his goalkeeper, drove the entire field and directed the shot exactly under the top post of Hellebuyck’s goal.

“I mean it was kind of happy. It was kind of swinging around the net. They had a few sticks around me and I was lucky that they only hit me in the shin guard or my pants,” said Makar immediately after the match. “Our forwards kind of pushed their defenders way back, so I tried to drive it into the attacking zone and just try to throw it on goal. I was a bit lucky.’

Okay, maybe luck played a part. But at the same time, it is not the first time that Makar scores goals as if from partes. His goal in the fourth game, which gave the Avalanche a 3-1 lead, was the last masterpiece that went around the hockey world so far.

In the playoffs, he played all four duels and collected eight Canadian points for two goals and six assists. He is Colorado’s most productive player and leads Canadian defensemen in scoring. He is only the second defenseman in history to score eight points in his first four games, joining Bobby Orr in 1971 and 1972.

“I don’t think it would surprise many of us anymore. But I don’t think there’s really anyone else in the league who does it like he does. He’s just such a good skater, he’s got good hands, and then the way he can shoot the puck is one of the best. So he’s really fun to watch,” Colorado linebacker Sean Walker said.

“It wasn’t until I saw it during the retake that I realized how good it was. And I think Devon Toews said it yesterday that Cale is the best in the world,” described forward Casey Mittelstadt.

Cale Makar probably likes elimination fights a lot. However, he made his NHL debut in the 2019 playoffs. After the end of the college NCAA season, he joined Colorado and immediately showed his qualities. He collected six Canadian points in ten games. Three years later, he was one of the mainstays during a dream run to the Stanley Cup, even winning the trophy for the most valuable player of the playoffs.

“It’s really a blessing to watch the best player in the league, the best defenseman in the league, go on the ice every night and do the things that he does,” Walker said.

The Avalanche hockey players would like to lift the Stanley Cup over their heads again, but they know that they have to go step by step and the first partial goal is to knock out the Jets. This can be done on the night of Wednesday, when the fifth duel of the series is scheduled.

“I feel like we’ve been really good lately, not just working well, but staying in the present and not looking too far ahead. Whenever you have to end an opponent’s season, it’s the hardest game. We have to go into it with the same mentality and make sure that everyone is on the same page, because it is clear that they will give everything they have,” described the Canadian defender, who is again among the Norris Trophy finalists this year.
