“The team announces that Technical Director Adrian Newey in the first quarter of 2025 will be leaving the Red Bull Technology Group,” the team said in a statement.

The chief engineer will retire from Formula 1 to focus on the final development and delivery of Red Bull’s first hypercar – the highly anticipated RB17. He will continue to be involved and dedicated to this exciting project until its completion.”

“We would like to thank Adrian for the successes we have achieved during our cooperation so far. He was instrumental in us achieving a remarkable seven Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship and six Constructors’ Championship titles – a total of 118 wins and 101 pole positions including pole position and victory in STR 2007 (meaning STR2008 car, editor’s note).

Agreement and more…?

Newey should thus be cut off from the events in F1 and focus on the RB17 hypercar. This could replace classic managerial leave. After his departure from Red Bull, he could theoretically immediately or almost immediately take up work elsewhere and have a say in the development of the car for 2026 (its development is now prohibited anyway and will only be possible from the New Year).

It is not yet clear where his next steps will lead. Ferrari is mentioned as the most likely option, where Newey would work with the seven-time world champion. Aston Martin, Mercedes or McLaren cannot be ruled out either.

The first F1 project by Adrian Newey (*1958) was the March 881 car in 1988. The team subsequently became Leyton House. He quit the team in the summer of 1990. He then worked for Williams (1991 to 1996) and McLaren (1997-2005). He has been with Red Bull since 2006.

“Ever since I was a little boy, I wanted to be a fast car designer,” Newey said. “My dream was to become an engineer in Formula 1 and I was lucky enough to make that dream come true.”

“For nearly two decades, I have been honored to play a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progression from a fledgling rookie to a team that has won multiple titles. However, I now feel that the moment has come to hand over the baton to others and seek new challenges. In the meantime, we are in the final stages of development for the RB17, so I will focus on them for the rest of my time with the team.”

“I would like to thank the many amazing people I have worked with on our journey at Red Bull over the past 18 years for their talent, commitment and hard work. It has been a real honor and I am confident that the engineering team is well prepared for the work that lies ahead in the final development of the car within the four-year period of this set of regulations. On a personal note, I would also like to thank the shareholders, the late Dietrich Mateschitz, Mark Mateschitz and Čaller Júvitj for their unwavering support during my time at Red Bull and Christian, who was not only my business partner but also our families are friends. Thanks also to Oliver Mintzlaff for directing it and to Eddie Jordan, my close friend and manager.”

“All our best moments over the past 20 years have come with Adrian’s hand at the technical helm,” said Christian Horner. “His vision and genius helped us win 13 titles in 20 seasons. His exceptional ability to create concepts beyond F1 and bring wider inspiration to grand prix car design, his remarkable talent for accepting change and finding the most beneficial areas of the rules to focus on, and his unrelenting will to win have helped the Red Bull Racing team become a greater force, than I think even the late Dietrich Mateschitz could have imagined. What’s more, the past 19 years with Adrian have been a lot of fun. When Adrian joined Red Bull, he was already a superstar for me. Two decades and 13 championships later, he leaves as a true legend.”

“He is also my friend and a person to whom I will forever be grateful for everything he brought to our collaboration. The legacy he leaves behind will resound in the halls of Milton Keynes and the RB17 will be a worthy testament and legacy of his time here.”
