Adrian Newey leaves Red Bull, bids farewell to extreme performance hypersport

--

Newey spent 19 years at Red Bull, and thanks to his often unusual technical solutions, the Austrian team celebrated seven rider titles and six constructor titles. At the age of 65, he has now announced that he will end the collaboration next year.

“For nearly two decades, it has been my great honor to play a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progression from a fledgling upstart to a team that has won multiple titles. I feel now is an opportune time to pass the baton on to others and seek new challenges for myself,” Newey said in an official statement. “We are in the final stages of development of the RB17, so for the rest of my time with the team I will be focusing on this project.”

Red Bull plans to unveil the hypersport later this year. It is to use a hybrid drive system based on a ten-cylinder spinning up to 15,000 revolutions per minute.

Newey has previously stated that the engine will produce over a thousand horsepower combined with an electric motor of over 200 horsepower that will provide torque when shifting and will also serve as a reverse gear.

Team boss Christian Horner previously told Autocar that the closed-top hypersport could be approved for road use if owners wish to convert it to meet local traffic regulations.

Red Bull plans to build only 50 units at a rate of 15 per year. The Hypersport will be shown to the world for the first time this summer, and track testing is planned for early 2025, just before Newey leaves the team. Production is scheduled to begin in 2026.
