A prestigious tournament such as the hockey world championship demands a different price range for beer. Half a liter of Pilsner beer will be on tap in the fan zone near the Ostrava Arena for 110 kroner, and inside the hall thanks to the long-term Ostravar contract. However, the price is shrouded in mystery and only the first visitors will find out. “The price of beer in the hall is not set by the brewery, and therefore we cannot comment on it,” Denisa Mylbachrová, spokeswoman for Staropramen breweries, said. For many fans, whether local or foreign, it can be a tempting alternative to go “a few steps” further for cheaper beer.

Beer lovers will have to go to Cihelna u Chýlků on the border of Vítkovice and Zábřeh, where the brewery is located, but Vítkovice is farthest from the selected establishments where Deník monitored prices. The distance from the hall is about 1.5 kilometers. The compensation for the distance, however, is the best price of beer far and wide. “We are keeping the beer prices the same, we are not changing the price list of the menu either,” informed the waitress Regina Hajná, adding that a dozen of Radegast costs 41 crowns (38 crowns a dozen) and a pint of twelve-degree pilsner 49 crowns.

For the time being, they keep the standard opening hours here (from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays), but after the first stressful weekend they are ready to extend the opening hours in view of the evening matches, which start at 8:20 p.m. and the spectators will leave the hall until before eleven in the evening.

Miners at old prices. Beer will become more expensive from Sunday

The Eliáš Restaurant is also preparing for an influx of not only hockey fans. Although here too they will evaluate the operation after the first weekend, they plan to raise the price of beer. But only from Sunday, May 12. “For Baník fans, who come to us in large numbers before home matches, we want to keep the price at the current level,” explained a waitress from Restaurant Eliáš to Deník. Therefore, hockey fans, especially fans, who go for a beer in a well-known pub roughly a kilometer away during the first two days of the championship, will probably be pleasantly surprised. The current prices at Eliáš are 42 crowns for a dozen of Radegast (39 crowns for a dozen) and 52 crowns for a dozen of Pilsner beer. For the duration of the tournament in Ostrava, the opening hours are also adjusted, from 8 a.m. to 3 a.m. It will therefore only be closed for five hours every day in the morning. And for the guests, they are also preparing an as yet unspecified surprise called “happy hour”.

“Crowds like nine years ago” are also being prepared in Schönthal, or Osaka, as the established establishment’s current Asian name sounds.

Here they increase the price (beer only, the price of food remains the same, editor’s note) already on the first day of the tournament. As of Friday, May 10, the price of 39 crowns for twelve Radegasts (35 crowns for ten) will be cancelled. “It’s still under negotiation, but we were talking about a twelve would cost 59 kroner and a dozen 49 kroner, which I think is already the standard price somewhere today,” said waitress Mirka to Deník.

The footballers of Baník Ostrava last won the title in 2004. In the picture from that season, gunner Marek Heinz celebrates a goal with the fans during the match in Žižkov.

“It’s important for us that people are satisfied, so we don’t want to make things extremely expensive. Those 14 days are not worth it for us to significantly increase the price and lose regular guests,” explained the company’s strategy, a long-time employee, who from her position also remembers the previous Ostrava championship nine years ago, when it was still “blasted” in Schönthal. “We hope that will be the case this year as well. We are on the tram route, people follow us along the way, because there is a parking lot in Dolní Vítkovice, the hotels are full and there are not many restaurants in Vítkovice.” Osaka is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. hours), but after the first weekend the opening hours will be extended to one hour.

On Friday, Deník will take a look at how the hockey world championship raised the price of beer in well-known establishments in the city center.
