“I have a very important, but very sad and at the same time nice message. The 2024 season is my last. At the end of it, I will end my career,” announced Thiem. “The wrist is not cooperating as it should and as I would like it to. The second reason is my inner feeling. I thought about it long and carefully and this is the only right decision,” he added.

His lifetime achievement is a four-year-old triumph at Flushing Meadows after a grand final upset against Alexander Zverev. He also played for the Australian Open title in the same year, falling short of Novak Djokovic, and failed in the French Open finals against Rafael Nadal in 2018 and 2019. Of the Austrian tennis players, only Thomas Muster, who dominated Roland Garros in 1995, was able to win a Grand Slam.

Thiem won 17 tournaments on the ATP circuit, but he celebrated his last triumph in New York. In June of the following year, a wrist injury stopped him from flying, and after a long break he never climbed back among the absolute elite; moreover, his problems kept coming back. He hinted at the possible end of his career at the beginning of this year, when he stated that he had to think about whether it still made sense to continue. He is currently ranked 117th in the world.
