The Australian racer did not like the tactics that Haas pilot Kevin Magnussen demonstrated in Miami (as well as in previous races).

Kevin Magnussen has always been a very aggressive type of racer and has often been referred to as the ‘bad boy’ of Formula 1.

This season, the Danish rider confirms his reputation again, albeit a little differently than in the past. With his maneuvers on the edge (and sometimes even beyond) the rules, he helped Nik Hülkenberg to gain several points by deflecting opponents’ attacks, thereby creating a “cushion” for his colleague.

Magnussen presented himself in a similar way during the past weekend in Miami. Specifically, in Saturday’s sprint, when he used aggressive tactics to create a lead for Hülkenberg, who was driving in front of him, which the German used to gain two points.

Although Magnussen earned a penalty of 35 penalty seconds for his actions, after the race he bluntly admitted that he deserved the punishment and that he was simply working for the team.

However, the Haas driver’s approach was criticized by Oscar Piastri, who said Magnussen was setting a dangerous precedent by knowingly breaking the rules.

“I heard his comments saying that he deserved all the punishments he got. I don’t think this is the right way. It’s not a very good precedent for everyone,” said Piastri, quoted by F1i.com.

“Getting penalties and saying, ‘Well, it was kind of 50/50,’ is one thing, but getting that many penalties and saying, ‘Yeah, I deserve them all,’ creates something that should be more closely guarded,” he shared his the opinion of the Australian, stating that a more appropriate punishment would be if the competitor were to pass through the pits as a punishment for a similar offence.

Magnussen is one offense away from being banned from the start

“We had a lot of discussions with the commissioners and with the FIA about what happens when you go off track and gain an advantage. I think there are certain scenarios where it is very difficult to return a position. But I would say that all problems would be solved if the FIA said that the driver must return the position (which he obtained in an illegal way, editor’s note), otherwise he will get a pit stop. Then it would remove such a driver from the road,” added the McLaren pilot.
