In the past decade, he was one of the most feared gunners in the Chance League – he played for Ústí nad Labem, Kladno or Vsetín. Now David Tůma, at the age of 31, is surprisingly moving one floor down to Děčín.

What made you do it?
Family. We finished the shack and I also started going to the family business.

But a player of your quality would definitely get a job in a higher competition.
Yeah, I guess so. But I didn’t want to go somewhere else with my family. Malej started going to kindergarten and I wanted our children to have the background of a home – to find friends and not just move somewhere. My career wasn’t quite as important anymore.

Were you already decided during last season? Or was it finally decided how the season turned out in Ústí nad Labem?
I was returning to Ústí precisely because of home. That was the reason even then. Then unfortunately we fell, we didn’t agree after the season and I took advantage of Děčín’s offer. I also train children here, so I combined it like this – I’m getting a coaching license and I also added work to that.

“I wanted our children to have the background of home – to find friends and not move somewhere.”

But haven’t you thought about a foreign engagement yet?
Just this year I had the opportunity – to Germany. But it was already far away because of the family… In addition, my health was no longer what I had imagined.

You played for Kladno, for Sparta… How are you motivated now, when he won’t be playing in front of such packed stands?
It’s different – from the point of view that I go to work in the morning, then I go home for lunch, greet the children, play with them for a while, then I go to training with the children in Děčín, and then I have my training in the evening. So it’s more of a burden.

What do you actually do for a living in the personal sphere?
We have a tire service. So cars, changing shoes and stuff like that…

Three of you came from Ústí nad Labem to Děčín, including Michal Trávníček and Vladimír Brož. Did this also play a role?
I come directly from Děčín, so I also know the other guys, the coaches, the whole background. I didn’t go into the unknown. I went back to where I started.

Did it live up to your expectations, did you find a good team?
Yeah, here are the good guys. Everyone goes to work. (smiles) The gang is good. She was always good here, I think.

“I didn’t go into the unknown. I went back to where I started.”

In any case, you three were among the best players in Ústí. How did this increase Děčín’s ambitions?
Other boys, young and skilled, also came to Děčín. But we need to work on the game in the defensive zone, because I think we are quite strong in attack and we score enough goals. Although, we won’t change a lot either… This was also shown last time in Most.

Tuma is rampant, he took two more points against Kolín

You yourself had many chances against him.
That’s right, I had a lot of them too. (smiles bitterly) But we definitely want to fight for the playoffs. The team is here for that. But he needs to polish up the defense, that’s where we’re on fire.

You were very visible against Most: you had chances, you scored a goal and you also canceled a suspension for the opponent.
The referee probably didn’t see the whole thing. He must have seen me fall, but I tripped and the player was two meters behind me. I fell all alone. I’d be more ashamed if I didn’t call it off. I reported it to him as soon as I fell.

“This year, I think there will be something to watch in the 2nd league.”

The basic part is approaching and Děčín has increased the budget. Is there any pressure on you to make the season better game-wise?
The players have arrived, so the fight for the playoffs is definitely expected. We don’t want to play the bottom. This year, I think there will be something to watch in the 2nd league. It is very high-quality, many teams have also strengthened extra-league players. It will be interesting.
