- Graphics from AMD were supposed to be the main competitive advantage of chipsets from Samsung
- In the end, their contribution turned out to be debatable, to say the least
- The Koreans are reportedly planning to break up with AMD and come up with their own graphics solution
Three years ago, Samsung announced a collaboration with AMD, from which it promised a significant boost in the field of mobile chipsets. This partnership resulted in several chipsets, but AMD’s contribution to them is rather debatable, it is definitely not a revolutionary competitive advantage. Reputable insiders even believe that next year will be the last time we see AMD graphics in Exynos chipsets.
The end of AMD graphics on phones
The collaboration between Samsung and AMD bore the first fruits in 2022, with the Galaxy S22 series of smartphones. The Exynos 2200 chipset included the Xclipse 920 graphics chip based on the RDNA2 microarchitecture, which was the first to bring accelerated ray tracing to mobile phones. But as it turned out, the entire chipset was very energy-hungry and suffered from overheating, for which it earned a wave of criticism – users wrote petitions for the end of Exynos production and for the global deployment of Snapdragons in flagship models.
A year later, Samsung listened to their wishes and used only chips from Qualcomm in the Galaxy S23 series, but for this year’s Galaxy S24 generation, it returned to Exynos, including graphics from AMD. The current Exynos 2400 is faring significantly better in terms of competitiveness, but it still did not manage to completely catch up with the competing Snapdragon.
According to the informant Roland Quandt from the WinFuture website, Samsung is considering ending the cooperation with AMD and throwing itself into the development of the graphics chip on its own. Due to ongoing development, the Exynos 2500 (S5E9955) being prepared for the Galaxy S25 series should still contain AMD graphics, and then Samsung will reportedly switch to its own solution.
Its development is to be handled by the Samsung LSI unit, which designs processors, image sensors, display controllers and other chips not only for smartphones, but also for the automotive industry, consumer electronics, etc.
