According to police spokesman David Chaloupka, the cause of the accident is not yet clear. Rescue spokeswoman Michaela Bothová informed that the driver was slightly injured and ended up in a Znojmo hospital.
Firefighters sent four units to the scene to help the farmers with the transshipment of piglets onto sidings, in addition to the leakage of operating fluids from the truck.
“The trains are not that big, so they will probably commute before all the piglets can be transferred,” said fire department spokesman Jaroslav Mikoška shortly after the accident. According to him, the last live piglets were taken away around noon.
Workers from the State Veterinary Administration also arrived on the scene, supervising the handling of live and dead pigs. According to the spokesman of the administration, Peter Majer, approximately one hundred animals died, and another eight were euthanized by veterinarians due to their injuries.
The agricultural enterprise ZEA operates in Hostěradice, which also farms pigs here. According to Majer, the farm owner was transporting piglets between two nearby breeding centers.
