Arthur Aidala, Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer, told the BBC on Saturday that his client was taken to a Manhattan hospital on Friday in a deteriorating condition. “He seems to need a lot of help, even physically. He has a lot of problems,” Aidala told the AP.
He later said Weinstein was taken to the hospital because he needed “immediate medical attention.” “Harvey is undergoing a myriad of tests and has remained under observation,” he added.
Weinstein’s 2020 conviction for rape and sexual assault was overturned by an appeals court on Thursday. The appeals court is also ordering a new trial on the grounds that Weinstein was denied a fair trial because prosecutors called witnesses whose accusations were not part of the charges against him.
However, he will not be released, because the sentence from last year in Los Angeles, where Weinstein was sentenced for rape and sexual assault to sixteen years in prison, is still valid. He remains in custody at Bellevue Hospital.
Aidala is scheduled to meet with Weinstein on Monday before his court appearance on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.
Weinstein’s lawyers previously said the former film producer had a number of health problems, including diabetes, sleep apnea and heart problems.
