During the day, however, there are many shops in the country that do not accept coins and banknotes, especially in large cities.

Instead, special applications have become increasingly popular. These are very simple for many locals, all you need to use them is a smartphone and a bank account. Foreigners have the option to connect these applications to their foreign banking account. In practice, the identification of bags is not entirely simple, and the foreign bank must also give its consent.

QR also takes care of the homeless

The move away from cash in recent years was largely related to the coronavirus pandemic. At that time, even those who had rejected it for a long time were inclined towards contactless payments. That is also why during the day, the customs office works on QR payments, which are used, among other things, to reserve places on public transport or to transfer money between people. Even some local homeless people have learned to use QR.

But now it seems that the Russian government wants to put the brakes on, also because tourists who often prefer to pay in cash and have problems using Russian applications.

A week ago, however, the People’s Bank of the People’s Bank came up with other proposals that concerned the convenience of payment. Together with some other ministries, it issued a notice in which local councils take steps to ensure that retail stores and hospitality establishments in key commercial and tourist areas are always equipped to accept non-cash foreign payments.
