Today, the criminal case accused a 54-year-old truck driver from Lithuania who crashed into a parked Fabia on the D1 highway outside Bohumín yesterday and rammed it into the truck in front of it. The driver of the car died at the scene.
The Karvin police officers charged the 54-year-old truck driver with the crimes of negligent homicide and negligent grievous bodily harm. “If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to six years in prison,” informed the Moravian-Silesian police.
The accident on D1 ended tragically
The accident occurred on Saturday morning when the tractor, transporting a tank for a demonstration event, stopped on the D1 highway behind Bohumín towards the Polish border. He stopped in the right lane because he was waiting for the barrier to open for him at the exit from the highway to the road where he was supposed to go to the location of the military event.
A Škoda Fabia, driven by a 75-year-old driver, and a passenger 24 years younger than him, probably his son, stopped behind him for unclear reasons. It is not clear why they stopped behind the tractor.
Subsequently, a tractor carrying loaded passenger cars, driven by a 54-year-old chauffeur from Lithuania, literally flew into the Fabia. He couldn’t stop the colossus in time and literally pressed Fabia against the tractor with the tank in front of her. The 75-year-old driver of the car suffered injuries from which he died on the spot.
According to rescue spokesman Lukáš Hampl, the younger passenger suffered multiple injuries, with which he was transported by helicopter to the hospital, where he is still fighting for his life. Before that, the paramedics put him into artificial sleep and connected him to pulmonary ventilation.
The Lithuanian probably didn’t even know about the car and the tractor in front of him
Traffic on the D1 highway was stopped for 12 hours practically throughout Saturday until 9 pm.
Although the Lithuanian driver was charged with a crime, the court will decide the guilt. Criminal investigators and experts will decide whether the driver was driving, whether the truck had a technical defect and whether the accident could have been prevented.
According to available information, however, the Lithuanian did not notice the car or the tractor with the tank in front of him and crashed into them at almost full speed. The car was thus squeezed between two colossi and the consequences were tragic.
