The Garrick vote took place on Tuesday evening. Only about fourteen percent of this star-studded women’s club said they were in favor of drinking women. Some have recently stated that the EU is quickly planning to nominate a candidate made up of prominent women. British actress Judi Denchov or English classicist Mary Beardov should be among them.

The club’s decision was followed by a fierce debate after the last round. Many of them believed that drinking alcohol changed Garrick’s character. Detractors pointed out that even in London there are several social clubs for women only.

According to the British newspaper The Guardian, the most vocal advocates for women to drink were the actor Brian Cox and Stephen Fry, as well as the English newspaper John Simpson. He even wrote on X’s social media that if he doesn’t agree to drink, he won’t be able to stay in the club.

Various Garrick Club members including Sting, Mark Knopfler and leading actors and producers have reportedly written to the Club chairman saying they will resign if the membership doesn’t vote to accept women next Tuesday. Many others like me would also find it impossible to stay.

lenov Garrick last voted to drink en in 2015. That time fifty percent voted for it. However, the club’s statutes required at least a two-thirds vote to change the club’s rules. So far, the women’s club has admitted women only as members. Among other things, they were forbidden to enter the lounge Under the Stairs, where they gather after a long night to have a drink and a meal.

Although the Garrick is not the only club in London where only men can be found, it is undoubtedly the most famous. It was founded in 1831 by a group of men of letters who announced at the time that the club would be a place where actors and distant and cultured people would meet under equal conditions and where easy communication between artists and patrons would be encouraged.

The club sat in the heart of London’s West End. Actor Benedict Cumberbatch, musicians Sting and Mark Knopfler or the mayor of the British government Oliver Dowden are among his five, except in changes. King Karel III is also an Estonian fief.
