The international festival of animated films Anifilm in Liberec knows the winners of the national competition. The organizers announced the winners in the six categories of the Czech Horizon competition at the opening ceremony of the show on Tuesday, May 7, in the evening.

A full-length puppet film

“The award for the best film, short or feature-length, went to Tonda, Slávka and magical light by Filip Pošivač. The same as the best animated film ever, which is the award of the Czech Television for the best animated film, also Tonda, Slávka and magical light,” said the winner of the festival’s two main awards, its director Tomáš Rychecký. In the national competition Czech Horizon this year, a jury consisting of professionals in animation evaluated a record 69 works.

Filip Pošivač’s full-length puppet film takes place in a gloomy apartment building in the days before Christmas. Eleven-year-old Tonda has a unique quality, since he has been glowing since birth. His new friend, the newly moved in mysterious girl Slávka, searches with him for the origin of the mysterious wisps of darkness.

The award for the best student film in Liberec went to Daria Kashcheeva with the short animated film Electra. This year, she also won the non-statutory award of the Czech Lion for the best student film for it.

In the Český obzor category intended for series, the pilot of the Veggierado series by director Jan Bubeníček won the award, the award for the best Czech commissioned work went to Marek Berger for the spot Rychlé šypy slaví 85 years, and for the best Czech video clip the jury chose the creatively unique work Prezident Lourajder: Lunapark, which was directed by Matej Mihályi.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Screenwriter, dramaturg and teacher Jiří Kubíček received the award for lifetime contribution to animated film on Tuesday 7 Kětna at the opening of the 23rd annual Anifilm international festival in Liberec.

Festival director Tomáš Rychecký said that the 80-year-old Kubíček is a personality of animated film and few people have such an overview of Czech animation as he does. “He was in Short Film as a dramaturg.

He was also there after the revolution when the department of animated film was founded at FAMU, so he helped educate several generations of animators and directors.” The award-winning Kubíček is also the author of texts dedicated to animated film, the theoretical book Introduction to the Aesthetics of Animation and the series Masters of Czech Animated Film.

The international Anifilm festival will last in Liberec until Sunday, offering a total of 444 competitive and non-competitive films. The accompanying program consists of exhibitions, concerts, theaters, a music or dubbing studio. The organizers will announce the results of the international categories on Saturday, May 11, in the most watched competitions of ten full-length and 28 short animated films.
