Fuel prices began to decrease at the end of April, before their prices had been rising for more than a month. Compared to the situation a year ago, gasoline is now about three crowns more expensive per liter, while motorists paid 6.29 crowns less per liter for diesel.

According to Purple Trading analyst Petr Lajsko, several factors are behind the current price reduction. “The price of diesel on the stock exchange in Rotterdam fell practically throughout April, and by the end of the month, gasoline also became cheaper. The Czech koruna has also been a big positive in recent weeks, which has even crossed the 25-crown mark against the euro after a long time,” said Lajsek. He also drew attention to the drop in oil prices on the market.

Analysts expect a continuation of the price decline. “In the next week’s horizon, diesel may reach close to 38 crowns per liter. The drop in the price of gasoline will not be so significant. I expect a break through the level of 40 crowns per liter and a subsequent drop of 20 to 30 pennies per liter,” said XTB analyst Jiří Tyleček. According to him, the increase in fuel pump operators’ margins prevented a more significant reduction in fuel prices in recent weeks. “However, he should no longer play a significant role,” noted Tyleček.

Trinity Bank economist Lukáš Kovanda also predicts a further drop in prices, according to which a more favorable situation on the oil market should be reflected in particular. “Gasoline should become cheaper by about 40 halters per liter, and diesel by 50 halers. Further fuel price reductions can also be expected in the second half of May,” said Kovanda. He reminded that the current development can, however, at any time reverse any possible complication of the situation in the Middle East.

The cheapest gasoline is filled by drivers in the Karlovy Vary region, where a liter costs 39.43 crowns on average. Diesel is the cheapest in the Ústí Region, a liter is sold there for an average of 37.37 crowns. Conversely, the most expensive fuel is offered by pumps in Prague, where a liter of gasoline costs an average of 40.76 crowns. Diesel is refueled there for 39.60 crowns per liter.
