Prague – Sales in services in the Czech Republic rose by 1.3 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year, having previously recorded a decline for three quarters in a row. Of the six main service sectors, in the period from January to the end of March, sales decreased year-on-year only in real estate, all other sectors recorded year-on-year growth. The Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) announced this on its website today.

“After three quarters of continuous decline, sales in services showed growth in the first quarter of this year, by 1.3 percent. The year-on-year increase in sales was recorded in all economic sub-sections except for real estate activities,” said the head of the data support department of trade statistics, of services and the environment of the CZSO Tomáš Harák.

Sales in accommodation, catering and hospitality grew the most, by 3.2 percent compared to last year’s first quarter. They rose by 3.9 percent in catering and hospitality, and by 0.3 percent in accommodation.

In administrative and support activities, sales increased by 2.7 percent. Travel agencies, offices and other reservation and related activities saw the largest increase in sales, up 15.5 percent. On the contrary, the largest decrease in sales, by 10.4 percent, was registered by activities related to employment.

In transport and storage, sales increased by two percent year-on-year. Air transport revenues increased by more than a fifth. They rose by 3.3 percent in the postal and courier activities sector, by 2.4 percent in land and pipeline transport, and by 2.4 percent in water transport. On the contrary, slightly lower sales compared to the previous year were reported by warehousing and ancillary activities in transport.

In professional, scientific and technical activities, sales increased by 1.4 percent year-on-year.

In information and communication activities, sales rose by 0.2 percent. “This development was caused by higher revenues from program creation and broadcasting (by 10.6 percent) and activities in the field of information technology (by 4.7 percent), which include, for example, programming, management of computer equipment and consulting in the field of IT,” said the CZSO. Lower sales were reported by telecommunications activities, information activities and publishing activities. According to statistics, the film and music industry recorded the biggest drop in sales, by 39.5 percent.

Compared to the previous quarter, revenues from services increased by 2.6 percent in real terms. Growth in sales was reported by most sectors, except for the sector of professional, scientific and technical activities, where statisticians recorded stagnation.
