The Apple M4 in the new iPad Pro has the performance of the 12-core M3 Pro processor from the MacBooks

A few days ago, new Apple iPad Pro tablets were introduced, which simultaneously received new Apple M4 processors. They switched from an 8-core configuration to a 10-core one (4 powerful and 6 energy-saving cores), while the weaker versions of the iPad with 256GB and 512GB storage are 9-core models (3P+6E). There have been other changes in the architecture of decoding and computing units, it also has a new generation of ML accelerators for running machine learning algorithms. Now the first results of the 10-core version appear in the Geekbench 6.3.0 benchmark, which measures CPU performance in a single-core and multi-core test.

The performance in Single-Core is really overwhelming, because the processor reached the score 3767 points. For comparison, the previous M3 Pro with 12 cores in the MacBook Pro reaches around 3080 points in the same test, which means that the novelty has 22% higher single-threaded performance than the aforementioned processor. This is a very significant increase indeed. The Multi-Core score came in at 14677 points, which is also a respectable result considering that the processor runs in a passively cooled 5.1 mm wide iPad body and has 10 cores. The 12-core M3 Pro is only slightly better with 15,200 points, and the new 10-core is only about 3-4% behind it.

We know that the cross-platform comparison is not the most accurate in this benchmark, but let’s still see what values ​​were measured on other processors. With its Core i9-13900KS and Core i9-14900K models, Intel reached about 3100 points in single-thread performance, the fastest AMD Ryzen 9 7950X and similar are between 2900-2950 points.

Multi-thread performance puts us roughly in the middle between the 14-core/20-thread Core i5-14600 (13,200 points) and the 14-core Core i5-14600K (15,900 points), in the case of AMD it is roughly at the level of the 8-core/16-thread Ryzen 7 7700 (14,900 points).
