On Monday, an interim order by Israel’s Supreme Court abolished state allowances for ultra-Orthodox men of military service age. Based on the Attorney General’s decision, the military will be required to deport people who have previously had exemptions from April 1. How many people are affected?
These are tens of thousands of young men of the age when they should go into the army. It’s more complicated in that they have different exemptions depending on how long they study. And they study as long as the exemption applies to them precisely so that they don’t have to join the army. But there are tens of thousands of people in each generation.

How can this threaten Netanyahu’s government, which also relies on the ultra-Orthodox coalition?
Fundamentally, because in the past governments have fallen because of this topic. One of the reasons Israel got to the round of early elections, which ended up being five, was that Avigdor Lieberman, one of the coalition partners, rejected exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jews.

The parties representing ultra-orthodox Jews, on the other hand, decided to leave the coalition. Since they have been a stable part of Netanyahu’s coalition for many years, Netanyahu relies on them and will not put together a coalition without them, and the current one would fall apart immediately.

The Israeli army confirmed on Monday that it had ended a two-week operation against Islamists in the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip, Shifa. With what result did she withdraw?
It depends from which point of view we look at it. The Israeli military claims to have arrested two hundred terrorists and claims that hundreds more were hiding there, making the operation a success from their perspective.

Allegedly, they also managed to arrest senior representatives of Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, from whom they hope to obtain interesting intelligence information.

Of course, from the Palestinian perspective, the picture is different. The Palestinians show the destruction of the hospital, claim that several patients lost their lives during the operation, and above all that the hospital is in a desolate state after the intervention.

On Monday, the United States and Israel are to virtually discuss the planned Israeli ground offensive in Rafah in the Gaza Strip and its possible alternatives. Why is Netanyahu’s cabinet insisting on a ground invasion when even its biggest ally is trying to dissuade it?
The Israelis claim that Rafah is the last center of Hamas, that there are at least four Hamas brigades that are still intact and need to be destroyed if the military capacity of the Gaza movement is to be significantly weakened or destroyed.

They also claim that Hamas leaders are apparently still in the tunnels under Rafah, including Yahya Sinvár, who is the main author of the October 7 attacks.

Of course, the problem with the whole operation is that there are a million and a half civilians in Rafah and it is highly unlikely that Israel would manage to evacuate them all to safety.

How to understand the fact that the US publicly expresses concern about the invasion of Rafah, but according to the Washington Post, the government of US President Joe Biden has quietly approved the delivery of additional bombs and fighter jets worth several billion dollars in recent days?
I think America will supply Israel with weapons of course because of the war in Gaza, but potentially also because of the war in the north against the Lebanese Hezbollah. So the support continues, but at the same time the US government is increasingly critical of the military operation in Gaza.
