Deputies already adopted the amendment to the law on conscription and military service last May, but President Zelensky added his signature only ten months later. The amendment enters into force the day after publication.

According to the media, lowering the age limit will create a relatively large group of young people aged twenty-five and twenty-six who will now be able to be called up for the army. “As of April 3, it will be possible to issue summons,” claimed the RBK-Ukraine server on Tuesday.

After last summer’s counter-offensive, which did not lead to a major breakthrough, the Ukrainian army found itself under the pressure of repeated attacks by Russian troops in the autumn, who in February succeeded in capturing the eastern Ukrainian town of Avdijivka, which, with its fortifications, represents the fulcrum of the Ukrainian lines on a front over a thousand kilometers long. The Ukrainians did not receive soldiers or ammunition.

According to the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper, President Zelenskyy said last December that the army leadership proposes to mobilize another 450,000 to 500,000 Ukrainians. But last month, new commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyj said the army would be able to mobilize fewer troops than originally expected to defend against a Russian invasion.

We will mobilize fewer soldiers than we expected, assured Syrskij
