Washington – The United States has imposed new sanctions on hundreds of individuals and legal entities. According to Reuters, they are mainly related to Russia’s war against Ukraine and are aimed at circumventing previous Western sanctions, for example through Chinese entities. The sanctions announced by the Ministry of Finance also apply to 20 companies based in China and Hong Kong, and also include almost 60 entities in Russia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Slovakia, which are accused of enabling Moscow ” to acquire desperately needed technology and equipment from abroad”.

“The Treasury Department has consistently warned that companies will face significant consequences for providing material support to Russia’s war effort, and the U.S. is imposing them (sanctions) on nearly 300 targets today,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

In Slovakia, the company Carovilli Trading s.r.o. is the target of sanctions. The firm buys computer equipment and software and resells it to companies in Russia, according to the US Treasury website. “In just a few months in 2023, Carovilli sent over 350 shipments of electronics, including electronic modules, printed circuits and microprocessors” to Russian company Compliga, a supplier of IT products and equipment and electronics, according to the US Treasury Department.

New sanctions were also imposed on three people in connection with the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the US State Department announced. Nearly 200 sanctioned entities are listed by the Ministry of Finance, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has designated more than 80 of them, writes Reuters.

Sanctions are also directed against, for example, companies associated with the Russian natural gas extraction project and the production of liquefied natural gas LNG 2 in the Arctic. They were also imposed on the Russian airline Pobeda, which is the low-cost division of Aeroflot, Reuters reported, citing data from the website of the US Treasury Department.
