Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned from his post. A transitional council will take over the government temporarily to calm the situation in the Caribbean country, which has been plagued by chaos caused by local criminal groups. The current finance minister, Michel Patrick Boisvert, will become the interim prime minister, Reuters reported.

Henry, who has been in Puerto Rico for the past few weeks for safety reasons, announced his resignation less than two months ago. It was demanded of him by criminal gangs, which caused a number of disturbances in the country. But the transfer of power did not begin until Thursday. “Our government has served the nation in difficult times,” he said in his official resignation letter, which he posted on his Facebook profile.

Gang violence has plagued the country of 11 million for years. Since the beginning of this year, however, it has started to increase significantly. More than 2,500 people were injured or killed by them in the first three months of this year, a 53% increase over the last three months of 2023.

The latest major fighting between gangs and police took place in the capital, Port-au-Prince, on Sunday, more than a month after the prime minister announced his resignation. During those, houses were set on fire in one of the slums of the capital, among other things. According to experts, approximately 90% of the city is currently under the control of gangs.
