He worked for the CIA. Now he called on the UN: Find out who blew up Nord Stream. And he pointed to the US

--

In September, it will be two years since the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, through which Russian gas flowed to Germany. There are several theories as to who was the perpetrator of this sabotage. Journalist Seymour Hersh claims it was an American-led sabotage, the Washington Post and Der Spiegel then came up with a theory, that a Ukrainian group is behind the sabotage.

Either way, the culprit is still unknown. That’s what bothers Larry C. Johnson, a former CIA officer who worked for the United States government in the late 1980s and early 1990s and then went into private business and is a political commentator.

He spoke about the sabotage of the Nord Stream now in a high place, in front of the UN Security Council. At the outset, he said that he supports Russia’s efforts to have the Security Council open an open and thorough investigation into the Nord Stream sabotage. “I am here at my own expense, without compensation for my time. All content (of the speech) and comments are my own,” he added. He described his objective as follows: to propose steps that would lead to an investigation of the event and to reduce the tension caused by this unprecedented attack. He added that he can offer a “unique perspective” precisely because of his experience at the CIA and also at the Department of the Interior, where he was involved in measures to combat terrorism and its expansion. He boasted that he had planned and executed 200 counter-terrorism training operations for US special forces while in the private sector. And he also successfully led money laundering investigations as director of the consulting company BERG.

Johnson met Harry S. Truman in his youth. He recalled his words from the 1950s, when Truman warned of another major war arising from the friction between states and nations that resulted in the Korean War. Truman said at the time that such a big war could be prevented. “We do not believe that this war is inevitable. One of the foundations of this faith is our faith in the United Nations,” Truman said at the time, explaining that the United Nations provides the opportunity to negotiate, it also has the ability to prevent aggression according to the rules, and thirdly, when the risk of aggression is averted, it makes it possible to reduce armaments.

According to Johnson, the Security Council has an obligation to peacefully investigate the Nord Stream sabotage. “I will not wade through the mountain of evidence that points to my own country, the United States, in this act of war against the Russian Federation and the Federal Republic of Germany. There was no security interest to justify the destruction of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which hit the people of Germany hard economically. This act did nothing to end the war between Russia and Ukraine and its masterminds in NATO. On the contrary, he made it worse,” he said.

He mentioned that at the CIA he learned how covert operations were planned, whether it was Afghanistan or Central America. “Such actions are not rushed, they are financed, planned and rehearsed before they are carried out,” Johnson said, adding that Seymour Hersh’s description of the action matched what he was taught at the CIA in the late 1980s.

He also mentioned that when he was involved in counter-terrorism, he sought a warrant for the FBI to investigate the terrorist attack on Pan Am Flight 103, better known as the Lockerbie affair. It was then that he noticed the difference between investigation and intelligence. “Very careful care was taken to ensure that the evidence gathered by the FBI was not tainted by intelligence activity,” he said, noting that both the FBI and the CIA looked out for each other. He said that only 15 months after the plane crash, evidence against the perpetrators had already been collected.

“Compare this investigation with the indifference and lack of interest from NATO countries towards Nord Stream. It has been 19 months since the gas pipeline was destroyed, and the NATO countries approach it like the three wise monkeys, that is, ‘I hear no evil, I see no evil, I speak no evil’,” he pointed out.

He also said he had some insight into the logistics and execution of the Nord Stream attack because of his work for the Special Operations Forces between 1994 and 2016. He said he was part of a team that designed and carried out various counter-terrorism exercises. They also simulated the actions of saboteurs and terrorists. He also later participated in a money laundering investigation and without access to classified information obtained information that would stand up as evidence in US courts.

“Through these investigations, I have come to realize that they are right at Disneyland, it is a small world. The connection between criminal organizations, large international firms, financial institutions and intelligence is not imaginary. It’s real and it involves billions of dollars. Because of my experience, I am convinced that a properly funded investigation will reveal documents, witnesses and sources that will prove beyond a reasonable doubt who sabotaged Nord Stream,” he said, noting that the UN has resources that private investigators have never dreamed of.

“I can say with certainty about the Nord Stream sabotage: It was carried out with the financial and material support of at least one state. Undoubtedly, there are documents in it with very limited access. But there is also certainly evidence outside of these documents that may hint at, if not outright solve, this mystery. My message is simple: Go after the money. Ask who benefited,” he said. He believes that the refusal to conduct a proper investigation casts a shadow on the reputation of the Security Council.

In conclusion, Larry C. Johnson again mentioned Truman and his words about the UN, that it has the possibilities to resolve conflicts peacefully. But this must be based on a proper investigation of this action.
