Similar statements by individual parties to the conflict cannot be directly independently verified. However, the commander of the Ukrainian army, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said at the weekend that the operational and strategic situation of the Ukrainian troops at the front is deteriorating. He also admitted that Russia is making progress in places.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had occupied advantageous positions and struck Ukrainian armed forces at several front-line locations – in the Donetsk, Kharkiv and Luhansk regions. In other places, according to the department’s statement, attacks by Ukrainian troops were repelled.

On Sunday, Moscow reported the capture of the Ukrainian village of Novobachmutivka. It is located near the village of Očeretyne, which has recently become a focus of fighting and, according to the media, the Russians control a large part of it.

The Ukrainian General Staff said in its regular morning operational briefing on Monday that its troops repelled enemy attacks near Semenivka as well as on other sections of the front line.

Nevertheless, the commander of the Ukrainian army admitted at the weekend that the situation on the frontline had worsened for the Ukrainian defenders. “Units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have moved to new lines west of Berdych, Semenivka and Novomykhaylivka (…) Overall, the enemy achieved certain tactical successes in these areas, but failed to gain operational superiority,” said Syrskyj.

According to him, the Ukrainian troops are trying to maintain their combat capability by retreating.
