The Russian Ministry of Defense did not disclose over which territory the defense shot down the missiles. His claim cannot be independently verified, Ukrainian authorities have not commented on the matter.

“Russian air defenses shot down ten Ukrainian drones, six US-made ATACMS missiles and two French-made HAMMER guided aerial bombs,” the Russian ministry said in a statement.

Aksyonov has released a photo that he says shows an unexploded ATACMS missile submunition. He did not specify which missiles came from or how many missiles Russian air defenses destroyed.

In recent weeks, the United States has secretly supplied long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, which has proven to have used them twice so far. In mid-April, it was for the attack on the Dzhankoy military airport on the Crimean peninsula, and last week during the strike on Berdyansk in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Zaporozhye region.

The delivery at the direction of US President Joe Biden was confirmed by US officials, including White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan. According to him, Ukraine has undertaken to use them only within its occupied territory, not on the territory of the Russian Federation.

At nearly 300 kilometers, the new ATACMS missiles have nearly double the range of those the United States has supplied to Ukraine since last October, and Kiev has been keen on them. According to Reuters, the Biden administration has been debating whether to provide them for several months.
