Artificial intelligence can save billions in healthcare if it is not stopped by European regulation

--

With the help of artificial intelligence and a huge amount of data, the start-up Carebot helps doctors diagnose lung cancer so far, but the system is already expanding to other types of cancer.

Note: The following text serves as a brief introduction to today’s episode of the Voice on the Desert podcast. It only provides an overview of a few topics discussed. To fully understand the context, it is desirable to listen to the entire episode.

Europe is committing ritual suicide in the name of environmental protection

Lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer, for its treatment, as with other types of cancer, early treatment is essential, and this is not possible without early detection.

Already today, modern healthcare throughout the world takes a wide range of chest X-rays, mammographic examinations and bone X-rays as part of the prevention or treatment of other diseases or injuries. It is very easy for doctors who focus on something else that is of interest to them, or even because of simple overload, to “overlook” the foci of cancer germs.

The goal of the Carebot start-up is not to replace doctors. But thanks to the large volume of data from X-ray images from all over the world and machine learning, artificial intelligence will be able to register even what a person would miss today. And it can therefore alert the doctor to the risks of cancer foci. By significantly increasing the chances of detection already in the first or second stage, not only will human lives be saved, but also a significant saving of costs that today’s healthcare system must spend on treatment in the later, and therefore much more expensive, stages of the disease.

Since this start-up is about human health, it is quite demanding on the certifications that are common all over the world. However, even in this segment, the European Union and the European Parliament definitely do not make the way to the world easier for new technologies.

Whether it is access to historical X-ray images or the introduction of new procedures into practice, paradoxically today, similar projects have an easier market entry in Great Britain, which is certainly not famous for the quality of its healthcare system, but due to the fact that it is outside the EU today, it is there a number of new ideas put into practice more quickly. The situation is completely different in the United States, what in Europe takes two years as part of the approval processes, in the USA it takes 6 months and it is certainly not at the expense of quality, because the approval system there is thorough, but focused directly on performance.

What will also be heard in this piece:

  • The problem of today’s healthcare is the overwork of doctors and medical personnel in general.
  • Early detection of cancer dramatically increases the chance of successful treatment and also reduces the cost of such treatment.
  • Europe is killing innovation in all fields with an excess of regulation, medicine is no exception.
