“Breasts are such a flashpoint in culture and this exhibition looks at them as a symbol. They touch on many topics, such as motherhood, sexuality and diseases,” assistant curator Kathryn Pearce told Reuters.
The works, which are exhibited in a total of five rooms, are intended to show how breasts have been understood and represented in art across cultures and traditions.
The exhibition contains works of art from more than thirty emerging and established artists from all over the world, ranging from paintings to sculptures, photographs to fiber art and video art. “There’s a lot to see. The exhibition also combines a number of periods, our oldest work comes from the beginning of the 16th century, but we also have contemporary works,” entices Pearce.
“Breasts were often painted and immortalized by men. We show a different view of breasts, we show that they are more than just an object of curious glances. They are something much deeper and more significant,” said the curator’s assistant.
The exhibition called Breasts, whose mission is also to promote awareness of breast cancer among the wider public, opened in Venice’s Palazzo Franchetti on April 19 and will run until November 24.
