No one can say Donald Trump didn’t warn them. In an unusually detailed interview with Time magazine last week, the Republican nominee laid out what he would do if re-elected president — and it’s already sending chills down the spines of liberals.
Among other things, he would detain millions of illegal immigrants, deploy the military to quell protests in America’s streets, introduce loyalty checks for federal officials, have Republican states monitor women’s pregnancies, and abolish the White House Office of Pandemic Preparedness (because last time everything went smoothly). He has repeatedly refused to rule out violence if he loses in November.
The American media is understandably focusing on the radical content of Trump’s domestic program. But he also expressed himself very clearly towards Europe. There is nothing new about his plans to treat NATO as a subscriber’s club – countries that fail to meet the defense spending target of two percent of GDP will not be able to count on America coming to their aid. Nor was it a surprise that he intends to build on his first term and escalate the transatlantic trade war.
