Fred Dewilde has been painting hundreds of pictures and sketches since November 13, 2015, using them to get rid of the horrors he experienced at the Bataclan. He also drew a comic about it, which was published in Czech as “My Bataclan”.

“I was lucky to get out alive. I saw a crowd trample a young girl. I wanted to help her up, but she couldn’t. I stayed with her. We were lying in front of the stage. Next to the girl was a dead boy. At that moment I understood the seriousness of what was happening. I played dead for two hours to survive,” he told Radiožurnál in 2022.

“Such an experience changes you from the ground up. It will amplify your good and bad sides a hundredfold. Added to this is fear, stress, constant unpleasant feelings, and of course all this cannot be reconciled with your previous life,” he described.

In 2022, Dewilde also spoke with reporter Martin Balucha about the consequences he had in his personal and professional life. I couldn’t handle the stress at work, I struggled with depression and now I’m on a disability pension. I divorced my daughter’s mother. Our relationship was no longer possible,” the cartoonist described.
