Above Poklonna Hill in the west of Moscow, under a giant tricolor, red banners with the white inscription Victory – Victory flutter in the cool May wind. You would be hard-pressed to find a place in the Russian capital where the warlike atmosphere of long-ago conflicts and the current war in Ukraine is felt more intensely.
Russians traditionally come to Poklonna Hora to recharge with winning energy. It is home to one of the largest, at least according to Russian assessments, monuments dedicated to the Second World War; Victory Park. This year, however, all those bronze Red Army soldiers and allied military equipment are playing a bit of second fiddle. They were overshadowed by the evidence of the triumph of Russian weapons brought from the Ukrainian front.
The exhibition of captured Western equipment from the Ukrainian battlefield is not to be missed. It is located near the main entrance to the park. And like a magnet, it attracts an incredible amount of people. At first glance, ordinary Russians, who perhaps five or six years ago drank beer in Prague and strolled along the promenade in Karlovy Vary, but now yearn to see the defeat of the West with their own eyes.
