The death of Artem Bardin, the head of the Russian occupation administration in southern Ukraine’s Berdansk, has not yet been confirmed, Russian authorities said. They previously reported that Bardin succumbed to his injuries after his car exploded and a shootout broke out in the city center.

“Information about the death of Bardin has not been confirmed. Despite the serious injuries, the amputation of the leg in the explosion and the great loss of blood, he is alive,” Vladimir Rogov, a member of the occupation administration of the Zaporozhye region, wrote in a telegram. Earlier, he told the TASS agency that Bardin died in the hospital.

The incident took place in the center of the city, according to the Ukrainian media, a strong explosion shook the whole of Berdyansk. Black smoke was billowing over the scene, the Unian agency reported, citing witnesses who reported gunfire after the explosion. According to Russian media, it was a terrorist attack. Ukrainian officials have not yet officially commented on the incident.

“The car belonging to the head of the city (Berđansk) was blown up, the car was parked at the city administration. Subsequently, there was a shootout,” Vladimir Rogov, a member of the occupation administration, said earlier, adding that doctors hospitalized Bardin in critical condition.

Russia attacked Ukraine on February 24 this year. Its troops control a large part of southern Ukraine’s Kherson and Zaporozhye regions and, according to Kiev, are preparing a referendum on joining Russia.

Nevertheless, the Ukrainian army announced a counter-offensive in the Kherson region last week and on Monday called on residents of the occupied territories to prepare for fighting.
