“It is clear from our data that electric cars are still gaining ground, although some markets are seeing this more than others,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “Rather than slowing down, the global EV revolution appears to be gearing up for a new phase of growth,” he adds.
The agency assumes that by 2035 every second car sold should have an electric drive. Currently, it’s about one in five.

Data show that sales of electric cars rose by a quarter year-on-year in the first quarter of this year. However, some manufacturers are currently showing concern about further developments and, on the contrary, are pointing to a drop in demand. For example, Tesla announced the discounting of its models because of this. There is no interest in Volkswagen’s electric cars either, and the Chinese manufacturer BYD also reports a decline.
In the Czech Republic, 1,307 electric cars were sold in the first quarter, which is 1.2 percent less year-on-year. Waiting for subsidies, which were launched by the state in mid-March, could be reflected in the statistics. According to data from the National Development Bank from last week, almost 800 applicants applied for the subsidy. In total, the state would like to support the purchase of at least 4,055 vehicles.
The IEA report identifies two main tools that can help to further develop electromobility. One is the construction of new charging stations, the other is the gradual discounting of vehicles.
“Increasing competition in the market and improving battery technology are expected to lead to lower prices of electric cars in the coming years,” the agency stated. The number of charging stations should then reach 15 million by the end of the decade, which is four times more than now. According to the agency, by 2035 it must be increased sixfold compared to today.
